ANCELOTTI HAS FAILED HIS TEAM

On Thursday night, it was a familiar tale for Los Blancos against Atletico, Atleti were compact, defended deep and with robust physicality, took their chances and got the job done against their arch rivals. Madrid fans will point to key mistakes at important times during the game.

THE DEFENSIVE MIDFEILDER:AN ARTIST

In recent times, it is often said that the art of defending is dying in the modern game, that the obsession with free-flowing attacking football by so many managers in the game today has made defending become secondary and people forget the fact that you might score three or more goals and not win

WHATS HAPPENING AT ARSENAL: MY TAKE ON THINGS

Its been a pretty grim couple of weeks for Arsenal starting from the absolute capitulation against Anderlecht to losing our 15-month unbeaten home record to a severely weakened Manchester United team.

FINDING MARCO'S PLACE

It is no secret that Marco Reus’s contract at Dortmund is nearing it’s end. It is also no secret that a release clause in his contract will be activated in 2015. As expected the top teams in Europe will already be scrambling for his signature as he is arguably one of the best and most promising talents in the football universe at the moment.

THE END OF AN ERA? NOT EXACTLY, LA ROJA HAVE A BRIGHT FUTURE

Spain, the reigning world and European champions, have been eliminated from the 2014 FIFA world cup having only played 2 games. People have been asking why? Well its because of a number of reasons.
First of all, Del Bosque got it all wrong with the initial 23-man squad. Dani Carvajal who ousted Alvaro Arbeloa from the Real madrid right back spot was ment to do same for spain, but he was left out in favour of Azpilicueta & Juanfran, the argument here could be better defensive stability, but with no Jesus Navas, Carvajal should have been called for his far greater attacking threat. Thiago was injured, logically, Isco should have replaced him, but he didn't. Funny how Juan Mata still got called up after, not being able to get a game at Chelsea & looking very shaky at Man utd. Fernando Torres & David Villa made the squad ahead of Llorente who averaged just under a goal every other game & maybe poor form at the 2nd half of the season cost Negredo but Aduriz was the top scoring Spanish player after Diego costa.
Continuity of bad seasons from Pique, Xavi & Busquets didn't help. This was added to the sudden loss of form from Casillas, Ramos, Xabi Alonso and David Silva. Also players like Azpilicueta & Diego Costa looked lost in the team. Torres was Torres. Pedro & Carzola did what they could. Only Koke, Iniesta & Jordi Alba put in real performances.
Change is needed. As a radical, I'll say wipe everyone, but realistically, some should be saved, and here's my view on how to go about this change with some top players saying Adios
In goal, it would be sad to see Casillas go, and I'll give him one more chance, but if Del Bosque decides against this, the next keeper should be David De Gea with Kiko Casilla & Pepe Reina as back ups. In defense, Dani Carvajal has to come in with Azpilicueta as back up. Sergio Ramos, should be made national team captain, he's a true leader and just had a blip at this world cup, he should be patterned by Inigo martinez, with Bartra & Pique, who has never been the same since Shakira came about, as replacements. Jordi Alba keeps his place at left back with Alberto Moreno as his back up. Busquets should remain, Javi martinez remains his replacement. Alonso out, Fabregas in, Thiago back up. Xavi out, Koke in, Isco back up. Pedro should remain, with Muniain as replacement. Iniesta should also remain with Jese as back up. Up top Diego Costa should remain, but if he continues to look lost, he should be replaced with Rodrigo or Adrian Lopez. Some other players should be on the fringes of the squad. Players like Morata, Delofeu, Derek, Jose Rodriguez, Nacho, Itarusspe, Illaramendi, Montoya, Sergi Roberto, Tello, Sergio Canales, Paco Alcacer.
After saying all this, the tiki-taka system should also be thrown away, its boring to a certain degree, and people now know how to play against it. There should be variations of systems and tactics. If Del Bosque can't do that, he too should go & the job should be given to Roberto Martinez or Unai Emery, people who would make those changes.
It may not be the end of an era, but the end of a phase of an era. Gone will be Xavi, Xabi, maybe Casillas, in would come, Thiago, Jese, Koke. Gone will be tiki-taka, in would come a variation of football that would make them unpredictable. The U-23 kids have been dominant at that level, maybe its time to take that dominance to the biggest stage. Clean those tears, there is hope, the future is here.
